Describe at least one technique in the written texts that helped show the writer's idea. Explain how the technique showed the writer's ideas.
In Sonnets 18 and 65 Shakespeare, the poet, uses the symbolism of nature to show his idea of beauty being destroyed by time.
In Sonnet 18, the author used a simile to give an idea of the way in which his love is even lovelier than his comparisons allow. A quote to show this is “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day.” Shakespeare uses a metaphor in the line “Thy eternal summer shall not fade” which gives the idea of his lover's beauty lasting forever. In this quote the poet is stating that the “eternal summer” is a symbol of beauty and it will never fade through time. The reason it will never fade is because beauty will live on in his poem. Shakespeare is bragging that he is such a good poet he can preserve beauty in his poem. Another technique in the poem is using personification of death itself. A quote that shows this is “nor will death claim you as his own.” This quote it shows that beauty will not be claimed by death as it will live on in the poem. Shakespeare is saying his writing can be more powerful than death.
In Sonnet 65, Shakespeare used symbolism to explain that beauty doesn't live forever and that time will eventually destroy it. Meaning that a person's beauty will eventually be lost as they age and lose their good looks. “How will the honey breath of summer withstand the battering storm of time.” The storm is personified in the poem to help me understand that time is destructive. The “summer” was used to represent beauty and the storm represents time. Shakespeare used a simile of a flower to show that beauty is fragile. A quote that supports this is “Beauty is similar to a flower”. This shows how beauty is something precious yet it can be fragile and easily broken like a flower also. Shakespeare used symbols such as “gates of iron” and “great rocks” to give an idea of hard objects being destroyed by time. If hard objects cannot overcome time then what are the chances of a flower surviving the destructive forces of time. Another language technique used is a rhetorical question to show how time is unstoppable. A quote that supports this is “What strong hand can hold back swift foot of time?”.This quote states that time is infinite and it will not and cannot be held back for it is unstoppable. In Sonnet 65 Shakespeare uses a metaphor in the line “that it allows my love to shine eternally out of this black ink.” This means as long as people read this poem the author's love will shine eternally. Love cannot really shine out of ink but Shakespeare is bragging that he has found a way to capture beauty and love forever in his poems.
Overall I have learned that time will not wait for any of us because it is destructive. This poem also made me think that time is precious. However the author says that beauty will live through his Sonnets, which shows that we can keep the memory of someone alive.
